WRAL Lawyers on Call

Dial 919-891-9779

between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on March 1

to talk to a licensed lawyer absolutely free.

Nearly 400 North Carolina-licensed attorneys will answer calls from the Triangle and across the state as part of the 17th Annual 4ALL Statewide Service Day.

Calls are completely anonymous, and the goal of the event is to give people access to an attorney that they otherwise may not have.

Attorneys can answer legal questions on a broad range of topics, including:

  • Government Benefits
  • Consumer Fraud or Bankruptcy
  • Criminal & Traffic Education
  • Employment
  • Estate Planning
  • Family Law Issues
  • Foreclosure or Eviction
  • Education Law
  • Personal Injury
  • Business or Tax Law Health
  • Medical Issues

Prepare to talk to a lawyer

There are a few things to know and prepare for before you speak to a lawyer:

  • Have a way to take notes during the call. That can be pen and paper, on your phone, tablet or computer. You will want to write down resources, phone numbers and next steps.
  • Have a concise timeline of what happened, when and who is involved. Be able to describe your concern in detail, including names, dates and places.
  • Be ready to explain what you’ve already done to resolve your concern or issue.
  • Know what you want or need to happen with your case.

For those who were not able to call in, there are other options for free or low-cost legal help.

NC Free Legal Answers helps people who aren’t sure if they need an attorney, but want answers to specific legal questions. Volunteers can answer questions about non-criminal issues. It could take several weeks to get a response, but the service is free.
Legal Aid of North Carolina also has a helpline: 866-219-5262. Legal Aid can help lower-income residents with things like evictions, domestic violence, government benefits and some employment law issues.
NC Lawyer Referral Service is another option: 919-677-8574. Call this service if you know you need to hire an attorney and Legal Aid of NC can’t help. You will be connected with an attorney who will provide a 30-minute consultation for no more than $50.
