PRINCETON, W.Va. — Princeton shrugged off a ten-point first-quarter deficit to collect one of their better victories of the season, 63-61 over Mercer County rival Bluefield. The Tigers avenged a 74-51 loss to the Beavers on January 9.
“We competed, said Princeton head coach Robb Williams about the team’s improvement in their second game versus BHS. “We were in a rut. There were about three games we were in a rut and not playing well. We had some outside distractions. We put those distractions away. Since then, we have played real well.”
Bluefield (14-5) scored the first eight points in the game and they jumped out to a 16-6 lead midway through the first quarter. Kamron Gore scored 16 off his game-high 22 points in the first half before the Tigers made a defensive adjustment.
“Kamron Gore came out and was playing lights out. He made a big difference. We made a couple switches on who was defending him. We started playing a little bit smarter with the ball.”
The Tigers used an 8-0 run between the first and second quarters to pull within a point at 22-21. Bluefield led 34-29 at halftime. Princeton drew even at the end of the third quarter to tie the score at 46.
With the game tied at 57, the Tigers scored four consecutive points to take a lead they would not relinquish. Princeton collected two steals in the final minute to preserve the victory. Williams was impressed with his team’s execution in the final minutes.
“Keep your cool. Be smart. Be aggressive. We have played them before. We know them. They know us.”
Nik Fleming led four Tigers (10-10) in double digits with 16 points.
“Typical game for Nik. Nik plays out and in. We did think we would have a mismatch when we put our three big guys in.”
Gavin Stover added 14 points for Princeton. Britt Beasley scored 12 and Koen Sartin added 10.
“We can compete with anybody when we play. It is just that sometimes we don’t show up.
“Bluefield is number one in Class AA for a reason. We had to play really tough to get this one. We are real happy with it.”
Gore led the Beavers with 22 points. RJ Hairston added 13 points.
