Ravenswood closes strong, defeats Chapmanville 45-34 for spot in Class AA semifinal

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Not much was going Ravenswood’s offensively for the majority of the first three quarters in Thursday night’s Class AA semifinal against Chapmanville.

Trailing by five with inside 2 minutes to play in the third period, the No. 4 Devilettes got a three-pointer from Kadi Price to pull to within a possession, before Maci Mosser’s layup sent the matchup into the fourth tied at 25. Ravenwood’s momentum to end the third carried over into the fourth, and the Devilettes scored 20 points over the final 8 minutes to pull away for a 45-34 victory over the No. 5 Tigers.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well in the first half and we could’ve left that affect us going into the second half, but we didn’t,” Devilettes’ head coach Cara Williams said. “We kept plugging along and came together at the right time.”

RHS (19-6) moves on to a Class AA semifinal to face top seed Wyoming East.

Price ignited the charge and then began the fourth-quarter scoring with a triple that put her team on top for good.

“She has done such a great job this year coming off the bench and it’s a hard job to warm up and then go sit on the bench. She never panics,” Williams said. “She comes in, does our job and she sparks us. That’s all you can for from a sixth man.”

Although Chapmanville (15-10) got Hannah Miller’s layup in response to get to within a point, Ravenswood ran off the next 10 to put the contest out of reach for all intents and purposes.

Brooklyn Adams made 1-of-2 free throws to begin that stretch, which was followed by close range buckets from Mosser and Price. Following another Mosser layup, Emily Wratchford accounted for a conventional three-point play to leave the Devilettes with a 38-27 advantage and 3:54 to play.

“I try to get to the rim as much as I can to help my team,” Wratchford said.

It happened too often, according to Gore.

“Wratchford got in the paint on us and we didn’t do a good job closing that off for her,” Tigers’ head coach Kristina Gore said. “But giving up 45 we had a chance to win the game — we just didn’t do enough offensively.”

The Tigers got no closer than eight the rest of the way and Wratchford made 3-of-4 free throws with just outside 1 minute left to leave her team with a 41-30 lead.

Chapmanville led 10-9 after one quarter and for the entirety of the second, though never by more than four. Alaira Evans made a trio of triples in the opening half, including one that marked the final points and sent Chapmanville into the locker room with a 19-15 lead.

“We struggled shooting a bit throughout most of the game, but in the fourth quarter they started to fall,” Williams said.

Evans scored 13 of her game-high 17 points through the first two quarters. No other Tiger had more than six points and Chapmanville’s bench did not score.

The Tigers held Ravenswood’s top scorer Hadleigh McGoskey to four points and without a field goal on seven attempts.

“The approach was to shut her down. We weren’t going to let Hadleigh beat us and had you told me she’d score four points, I’d have thought the outcome would be different,” Gore said. “We struggled at times on the glass and they were able to sneak in and get a few offensive boards.”

Wratchford led Ravenswood with 13 points and seven rebounds. Mosser followed with 10 points and seven boards and Price scored right, while Adams finished with seven points and a game-best eight rebounds.

The Devilettes had all 13 of the game’s points off turnovers and won the battle of the boards 33-31, including 9-3 on the offensive end.

“That was one of the things that we talked about all week was how they have size and they’re big. They have great shooters and they get the ball up there. You have to block out,” Williams said. “We’ve been on them all year to yell ‘shot’ when a shot goes up so their teammates are aware to box out. That was definitely a focus and to hold them to three offensive rebounds, that’s a heck of a job. You can’t ask for much more than that.”
