Vigil held at St. Augustine’s University ahead of meeting to address latest financial crisis

St. Augustine’s University students and alumni gathered for a vigil on Sunday as the school faces a financial crisis.

This comes as the school deals with multiple financial issues. In December, the Southern Association of Colleges placed the school on probation due to their finances.

According to public records, the IRS placed a $7.9 million lien on the university for failing to pay taxes since 2020. The university is reportedly hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

The fallout has been far-reaching,including a possible loss of accreditation and teachers not receiving paychecks.

Sunday’s vigil at the St. Augustine’s Chapel brought together current and former students, and people in the community offering support.

“This building was built by amateurs, and we it under it with full-face that this roof will hold, that the wall will contain the love bursting in this space,” Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens said.

Vigil organizers said the vigil is “an effort to show physical and spiritual support to those who have been affected by the concerns of the university’s status.”

“It is in my imagination that each of you represents a community a household, a group of people who are also praying for St. Augustine’s [and] praying for the current students who are working tirelessly” one speaker said. “They are doing their job as students.”

Those in attendance said it has been a tough situation for everyone involved.

“It’s tough for students to focus,” Stephens said. “It’s tough for professors and staff to pay their bills. It’s tough for the administration to have to make promises and then break them.”

On Wednesday, Families of students told WRAL News their children hadn’t received tuition refund checks, with one family saying their child hadn’t received one in the fall semester either.

St. Augustine’s will hold a press conference on Monday at 11 a.m. to detail the school’s financial strategy going forward.
