Wayne nets 21st victory, sectional title with 68-30 win over Logan

WAYNE, W.Va. — Addie Adkins scored a game-best 24 points and Wayne led wire-to-wire in a 68-30 victory over Logan in the Class AAA Region IV, Section 2 Championship game.

Adkins connected on three triples in the first half and five more in the second half to tie a school-record with eight in a game.

“Last year, she hit seven in one game. So when she is hitting, it extends the defense out,” said Wayne head coach Wade Williamson.

“It is a big part of our game and when we hit them, we are usually pretty good.”

Wayne scored 14 unanswered points in the first quarter to jump out to an 18-4 lead. They extended that cushion to 34-17 at halftime.

The Pioneers held Logan to a season-low point total.

“I think we did a really good job on [Addyson] Amick and [Halle] Crouse. We really put our focus on them and made sure that we tried to limit their touches and limit their good looks.

Jaycelyn Sammons added 11 points for Wayne. Mikayla Stacy scored 10 and Brooke Adkins added 9. Logan was led by Kinley Steele’s eight-point performance.

Wayne (21-1) will host Ripley in the Region IV co-finals on Wednesday. Logan (13-11) will visit Nitro. NHS defeated Ripley, 42-32 in the Section 1 final. The winners of the regional games advance to the state tournament.

“We’ll enjoy this for a couple of days and then we’ll get right back at it. Just the fact that we get to play here, I feel pretty good about it.”
